House Rewiring Los Angeles

Home Rewiring Los Angeles

The wiring in your home is a critical part of its structure. It ensures that the power supply and connected appliances function optimally, and it protects you from electrical fires and related hazards. It’s important that older homes are inspected and rewired on a regular basis to meet modern standards and preserve the integrity and safety of your home.

Per a recent study on home structure fires, it was noted that lighting equipment and electrical wiring were the 3rd leading cause of house fires. It was estimated that there was an average of 31,960 non-confined home structure fires involving electrical distribution or lighting equipment in 2010-2014. This is another reason why Delta Quality Electrical recommends that Los Angeles homeowners upgrade their home wiring.

What is home rewiring?

Los Angeles home rewiring involves removing old, inefficient and dangerous wiring and devices such as breakers, outlets, or panels, and replacing them with an upgraded and modern system. However, it’s not always necessary to replace all of the wiring in your home throughout this process. In many cases, some of your existing wiring will be safe, so our electrical contractors can perform a partial rewire to save you money.

Do you need to upgrade the wiring in your home?

The only way to know with certainty if you need house rewiring is to get a professional opinion from an electrical contractor who is experienced in upgrading outdated systems. With that said, there are certain circumstances that almost always warrant rewiring. They include:

A house that was built before 1950

All homes built prior to 1950 have cloth insulated wiring. This type of wiring can spark, cause a short circuit fire and may cause injury or death by electrical shock if accidentally touched. The older your house is, the greater the chances that the wiring might be outdated or unsafe.

A house that was built or renovated during the 1960s and 1970s

Many homes that were built or renovated during these decades feature aluminum wiring, as opposed to copper wiring. This poses a fire hazard and makes the electrical lines inefficient.

Wiring that isn’t grounded

For the highest level of safety, your electrical systems and outlets need to be grounded. Grounding directs excessive electricity out of the house and prevents fires and electric shock. All outlets in your home should be able to have three pronged plugs used versus the older two prongs. This third prong is what grounds your electronics.

The regular use of extension cords

Extension cords should only be used on a temporary basis. Extension cords are a known to cause fires as they tend to be the wrong wire size and have bad connections, which can lead to a fire. In this case, you may need additional electrical circuits installed, which requires house rewiring.

As a general rule, it’s a good idea to have your electrical system inspected every 5 years to ensure that all connections are tight and safe, and your wiring is in optimal condition.

If you don’t know when your wiring was last inspected, it’s worth having the licensed electricians at Delta Quality Electric give it a inspection, especially if you have any of these warning signs:

  • • Circuit Breakers that trip or fuses that blow repeatedly
  • • A tingling sensation when you touch an appliance
  • • Flickering or dimming lights
  • • A persistent burning smell from a room or appliance
  • • Warm, discolored, or sparking outlets
  • • Two-prong ungrounded outlets throughout the house
  • • No ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets in kitchens, baths, and other areas exposed to moisture.

Another reason to consider upgrading your home wiring, is that some insurance carriers refuse to insure homes with older wiring, or charge owners higher premiums.

What to expect during the home rewiring process

To begin your Los Angeles house rewiring process, our electricians will visit your home and analyze your wiring. During that appointment, we’ll be looking for trouble spots and hazards to determine whether or not your current system is safe. We will then offer recommendations to increase its safety, usually by rewiring your home, replacing the electrical panel and adding more plugs, switches and outlets.

From there, we will return to your home to install the appropriate upgrades. In some cases, small portions of your walls will need to be opened up to access the wiring, but our Los Angeles electrical contractors will always repair and clean the area so that it can be easily repainted. In general, you can expect the job to last anywhere from a few days to a week depending on the size of your home and the extent of the project.
